5 Ways To Improve Your Dry Skin01/05/2015
The changing seasons can wreak havoc with your skin, particularly in Ireland where one day we’re enjoying a hot summer’s day and the next we’re sheltering from hail and snow. It’s no surprise that your skin doesn’t know if it’s coming or going. If it becomes dry as a result of all this crazy weather the only solution can be stepping up your skincare routine.
Dry skin can be stubborn about changing if you’re not treating it right and it’s so easy to accidentally make it worse. Don’t worry, we’ve put together our five top tips for using organic skincare to rehydrate your skin for a summer-ready glowing, smooth complexion!
1. Drinking water isn’t enough
The problem with drinking water to cure dry skin is that dry and dehydrated skin aren’t quite the same. The water doesn’t go straight to your skin – it works to rehydrate your body on the whole.
Keep drinking the water for benefits all round, but you also need to be conscious of your skin’s protective lipid barrier. Avoid exposing your skin to harsh weather conditions where possible and up your intake of fatty acids. This will help your lipid layer stay intact, which in turn will protect your skin and keep moisture locked in.
2. Opt for gentle, organic cleansers
Even cleansers marketed at dry, sensitive skin can often contain really harsh, unnatural chemicals which do very little to repair your dry, dehydrated skin. In fact, they can often be quite stripping.
You need to pick up an organic cleanser, like our Cleanse and Mend, which is an extra mild formula cleanser with organic lavender and chamomile that will remove dirt and impurities from your skin, without leaving it irritated.
3. Don’t over exfoliate
If you have dry skin you’ll probably have dry, flaky patches, which can be really stubborn about budging. The only real cure is to properly rehydrate your skin, but in the mean time it can be tempting to exfoliate your skin into oblivion in order to get rid of the flaky skin. Don’t!
Do softly exfoliate using a gentle scrub like Love a Scrub, or if your dry skin is a problem all over your body, maybe opt for a dry brush with organic fibers in the shower. The key is being gentle – don’t scrub your skin bare, you’ll only make the issue worse, even if you think you’re doing good.
4. Add a serum to your routine
It is a natural instinct to avoid oils – we’re told so often oily skin is bad, you’ll end up with endless spots, and you’ll look shiny. And oily skin does have its own problems, but they’re not ones you need to worry about if you’re currently suffering from dry skin.
Using a serum with organic oils like My Little Hero, will give your skin the extra oil it needs to create a protective layer on your skin, to allow your skin retain more moisture.
5. Avoid unnatural fragrance
While we all like to smell lovely and have our favourite perfumes, often the fragrances used in skincare products can contain a lot of chemicals that will irritate dry skin even further. This is often why opting for organic skincare products can be best for your skin.
Avoid deodorant soaps and skin care products that contain alcohol, fragrance, retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). Taking these out of your routine will help your skin retain its natural oils, which is a top priority when trying to beat dry skin.
