Sometimes we reach a time in our life where we are unsure what direction it’s going or what route we should take next. It is so easy to get bogged down in everyday normal life and then suddenly find yourself at a stage in your life with no idea how you got there.
If your life has reached this stage, find clarity by asking yourself the following questions:
- Have you a particular problem that’s causing you concern?
- Do you feel like you’re stuck in a rut and don’t know how to get out of it?
- Do you have a goal you’d love to achieve but it seems so overwhelming and you have no idea where to start?
- Do you look at other people and wonder how they always seem to be moving forward and making progress and you just feel stuck?
Sometimes all you need is a little helping hand to enable you to look at things differently and begin to believe in yourself.

Take a Step Back and Examine What’s Going On
Take some time out. Find a quiet space where you can concentrate. Think about everything that’s going on in your life – family, work, health, friendships, hobbies, everything! Write down all the aspects of your life that are important to you. Notice how you feel about each one. When you think about work does it fill you with anxiety or do you smile? Is your health something you’d rather not think about or do you feel proud that you look after your body and mind? Spend time on this exercise. The aim is to really get to grips with what currently makes you happy in your life and what causes you worry. Think about why you feel the way you do about each element. Why do you enjoy your job? What is it specifically that makes you happy to tell people what you do? Be honest with yourself. There is no point in ignoring something that makes you unhappy. Don’t force yourself to feel things – it can help to just clear your mind, sit quietly and repeat the topic in your head. You’ll soon notice how every aspect makes you feel.
Allow yourself to imagine that anything is possible. There are no obstacles. Nothing is going to get in your way. No matter what you do it will be a success and people will support you. Time is not an issue. Money is no object. What would you do? It’s impossible to understand what you really want without allowing yourself to imagine. When you decide what it is you would do if there were no obstacles in your way, think about how you would do that. It’s important to understand exactly what you want. You will eventually have to think realistically and consider what obstacles might present themselves but by knowing exactly what you want you can begin to find ways of achieving it. By understanding what it is you really want you will get a clear picture of the direction you want your life to take.
Break Things Down
As the saying goes the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You don’t have to do everything all at once and you don’t have to do it on your own. Break things down into stages. If your overall goal is to change careers then break that into smaller goals. Your first goal might be figuring out what you’d like to do instead. That seems more manageable than telling your boss you’re leaving, telling your partner you’re changing jobs, finding a new job, telling the bank you might have to juggle things with the mortgage for a bit etc. etc. Break it down into small steps and celebrate every step you take. You can also ask for help. Find someone who has done it before and ask them for advice. Knowing that someone else has done what you would like to do makes it all seem possible and less frightening. Life is not a race. Ask yourself every morning what you can do today to bring you one step closer. It might be the smallest thing, but it’s progress.
Believe in Yourself
So, you feel confused and you have no idea what to do? Believe that you are not confused and that you do know what to do. Deep down you know the answer. Believe that you have the ability to sort things out and you will find a way. Ask yourself what the solution is and wait for the ideas to pop into your head. It may be that you need to ask someone for help, that you need to delegate things or that you need to let something go but remember you do know how to move forward with your life if you’re working on a particular issue think about what skills are needed to resolve it. Believe that you have those skills or that you know where to find them. Always try to find an example of when you used skills similar to those you need now. Believe that you have the answers and the ability and things will become clearer.
So the next time you feel completely overwhelmed and can’t see a way forward just stop. It may seem like the complete opposite of what you want to do. ‘I mean how does she think I have time to stop when I’m so busy?’ I hear you ask. Believe me, it’s the best thing to do. Just take five minutes to clear your head and tell yourself that you do know the answers and you will achieve.
