6 Essential Foods for Healthy Skin25/05/2016
We are all familiar with the term “You are what you eat“, but would you be surprised to hear that 90% of our skin’s appearance comes from the inside out? With a little tweak to your diet by introducing a number of key foods, this can play a significant role in improving your skin’s health over time. Below we have selected 6 essential foods for healthy skin. Combine this with fresh air, regular exercise and a good organic skin care regime and not only will your skin thank you, your overall health will too!
Avocado – The Moisturizer
One of the best foods for healthy skin is the delicious avocado! Avocados are a great source of healthy, mono-unsaturated fats which are absorbed into your cell walls once digested, where they then strengthen and protect your skin cells. This process can prevent wrinkling and improve moisture content and the texture of your skin.
Include some avocado (a half of one will do!) into your lunchtime salad. Healthy and yum!
Introducing lemon into your diet is a powerful way to help your body detox and eliminate waste. A wedge of lemon in hot water first thing in the morning or at any break is a wonderful complexion cleanser. This routine will give your metabolism a kick start, give your liver a mini-cleanse and give your skin a vitamin C boost to help clarify your complexion.
Blueberries – The Anti-ager
Our personal favourite! These antioxidant power houses are packed with skin clearing properties to protect you from ageing. Antioxidants expand the lifespan of skin cells leaving them looking younger and healthier for a longer period of time. Blueberries also include beta-carotene which our bodies convert into vitamin A. This gives our skin more colour and more of an even tone.
Add blueberries to a smoothie in the morning by sprinkling them over your porridge. Or enjoy blueberries on their own for a great 3pm snack!
While foods can protect your skin from ageing, it’s important to complete your routine with organic and natural skincare products. VOYA’s super soft, antioxidant rich firming eye créme Bright Eyes will help to fight the signs of ageing and give a youthful appearance to tired eyes.
Water -The Hydrator
Even though we have heard it all before, ask yourself honestly how much water do you drink a day? Water makes up 60% of our body and is required to keep our cells hydrated so they can easily uptake nutrients and remove waste. Aim for 2 to 3 litres a day and you will be giving your skin every chance to shine!
Kale – The Tonic
The superstar vegetable — Kale is an excellent source of beauty vitamins!
This green vegetable contains a full range of vitamins (A, B, C, E and K) as well as potent levels of calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium and protein – a lot of goodness resulting in a skin clearing tonic!
Beetroot – The Blood Cleanser
This root vegetable can improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. Skin health relies on healthy blood and good circulation. The healthier your blood, the healthier your skin will be because this is where your skin gets most of its nutrients from.
To make a healthy, nutritious and delicious soup, roast beetroot and butter squash in the oven, before adding it to a simmering pot of stock and sautéed onions. Hand blend for a smooth, lump-free soup.
Incorporating these foods for healthy skin into your diet can drastically improve your skin, but to give yourself every opportunity to achieve the skin you desire it’s also important to complete your skincare routine with organic, natural skincare products.
