Eating a balanced diet, getting enough exercise and avoiding stress can do wonders for your skin. But what happens when you have a skin condition?
In May this year a resolution on psoriasis and World Psoriasis Day will be voted on WHO World Assembly. The resolution hopes to provide better access to care for people with psoriasis. Many people living with skin conditions around Ireland are unaware that the lifestyle they lead and the foods they eat can actually affect their conditions.
Foods which are high in vitamins, minerals and fatty acids are essential for healthy skin. A few super foods in particular can be attributed to reducing the signs of many common skin conditions.
Remember, you are what you eat! So health from the inside is reflected on the outside.
Here are some foods that you should try to eat if you have one of the following skin conditions:
This is a very common skin condition that unfortunately has no known cure. However, symptoms including itching and the accompanying rash can be lessened by avoiding smoking, alcohol and stress. Foods to reduce the itching include the anti-inflammatory garlic and ginger along with herbs such as rosemary and garlic. The National Psoriasis Foundation also recommends including fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, mangoes and figs in your diet to further reduce inflammation.
It is very difficult to balance the results of acne, especially in the teenage years when hormone imbalance can cause an over release of sebum which gets trapped in the pores. However, there are some foods that can help to alleviate the symptoms of acne such as oily fish and nuts. Brown rice helps to regulate hormones and grapes, garlic and avocado help to reduce inflammation.
This is another skin condition that cannot be cured but can be managed. Red lesions can commonly be seen on affected areas such as elbows and arms. It is very common; the Irish Skin Foundation estimates that one in 12 adults have the condition. Foods to eat include those high in fibre, fatty acids and proteins such as beans, lentils and soy. Raw vegetables and fruits rich in vitamin C are also advised as antioxidants.
