April is Stress Awareness Month and we here at VOYA are urging people to take time out from busy schedules and de-stress. People are so often rushed off their feet, tending to their families’ and friends’ needs that they rarely have the chance to relax and unwind for themselves.
What is Stress?
Stress is a normal part of everyday life. Daily events that are happening around you, initiated by yourself or others can put stress on your body. The human body is designed to react to two different types of stress: good stress and bad stress. Good stress can be positive, keeping you alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when you are faced with constant challenges without having the opportunity to relax in between.This is when stress-related tension builds up.

Not all stress is bad, some stress can be healthy and can kick in to protect you in times of need. An example would be protecting a child from an oncoming vehicle if they wandered obliviously onto a road. In this situation stress motivates you to rise up to the occasion. And in times of emergency, stress can actually save lives. Then there is bad stress, the type of stress that is harmful. This type of stress can have negative physical, mental, and emotional effects on a person causing your body and mind to overreact in situations. This negativity effects the body in many different ways. Some signs include muscle tension, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, heart disease, tiredness and depression, to name a few. In order to manage stress it is important to keep a positive attitude and accept that there are events in your life that you cannot control.
5 Easy Steps to Reduce Stress in Your Life
1. Identify What Is Causing You Stress
The first step in reducing stress is recognizing what is stressing you out. By identifying the underlying problem you will then be able to manage stress better. Ask yourself what is stressing you out? Is it work? Family life? Both? How are you reacting to this stress? There are loads of physical and mental reactions to stress and everyone reacts differently. Understanding how stress is effecting your life and body is the first step to finding the correct life/stress balance.
2. Have Some ‘Me Time’
Take time out for yourself. Sometimes this is easier said than done but even one hour a week just to yourself can completely de-stress you.
