Windsurfing champion Katie McAnena becomes the face of VOYA11/02/2014
Katie McAnena has achieved a huge amount in her 27 years. In between winning competitions on the international professional windsurfing circuit, she has also managed to complete her medical studies and now works as an orthopedic surgeon in Sligo.
The Galwegian emanates health and energy. She clearly has enough drive and enthusiasm to achieve anything she sets her mind to including the simultaneous pursuits of professional windsurfing and her medical career. Her positivity shines through whether she’s talking about windsurfing, medicine, her beloved Irish coastline or her love of VOYA: the organic beauty seaweed range.
‘I was exposed to the sea from before I could even walk. My mother is from West Clare and she’s an avid swimmer. My Granny taught me to swim in the Atlantic when I was three, so the sea has always been a huge part of my life.’
Passion for windsurfing
Aged 14, her mother enrolled her into the local windsurfing centre located close to the family home. It was here that Katie discovered her talent for water sports and established a lifelong passion for windsurfing. ‘Mum sent me there to keep me busy and that was it, I was hooked and have been ever since.’ Summers and weekends were spent on the water in Galway and, once Katie learned how to drive, she started exploring other parts of the country.
Katie’s passion for the Irish coastline is clear:
‘You’re willing to drive for miles just to get to the right beach so you see places off the beaten track that other people might not see, it’s brilliant. In Donegal, you get exposed to the wild west of Irish Atlantic conditions and it’s just so primal and beautiful. The sea is churning and you feel so alive and so connected to nature. I’m addicted to that feeling, it’s amazing.’
Protecting your skin with VOYA Skincare
The pro-windsurfer has the golden tan of someone who spends hours outdoors and she is conscious of the effects it can have on her beauty routine.
‘Conditions like Donegal where the water is cooler and there’s less sunshine leave you feeling great. But when you’re somewhere like Maui in Hawaii, the sun beating down and the salty Pacific water means my hair almost turns ginger at the end
s and I burst into freckles. I have very west of Ireland colouring.’
Her must-have products are ‘sun cream, sun cream and more sun cream’ as well as VOYA three-in-one hero product, ‘Cleanse and Mend’. It’s a make-up remover, cleanser and moisturiser all in one:
‘Perfect for travelling, I’ll be taking it on any trips I make this year.’
VOYA: Keeping long hair tangle-free
Katie uses Forget Me Knot conditioner for her long, ebony black hair:
‘It’s handy having long hair because you can tie it up but when I come out of the water, oh my goodness, it’s tangled and knotted and I look like the Queen of Sheba with hair everywhere so this product works miracles for me.’
