How to Determine your Skin Type27/04/2016
The first step towards getting beautiful skin is figuring out your skin type. Knowing this is absolutely essential when it comes to making decisions about your beauty regime and choosing the correct products. Using products for the wrong skin type can increase sensitivity, cause your skin to be unbalanced and even make your skin look older than it really is.
Knowing whether you have normal, oily, dry, sensitive or combination skin can stop those unwanted breakouts, energise dull skin and allows your products to work more effectively as they are formulated for your skin’s unique needs.
In order for you to identify your skin type we would always encourage you to seek advice from your local VOYA specialist. However as a homemade skin type kit, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide to help you determine your skin type.
Find out your skin type in 3 simple steps
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, remove all traces of makeup. Rinse thoroughly and carefully pat dry with a soft cotton towel. Do not use any products at this time and avoid touching your skin.
- Wait for minimal of one hour. Using a clean tissue, gently cover your face and blot lightly.
- When you remove the tissue hold it up to the light and observe your findings. Evaluate in the mirror how your skin feels especially if you smile or make any other facial expressions.
What is your skin type?
If you have large pores all over your face, your skin gets shiny throughout the day and visible oil appears on the tissue, it could be considered oily skin. Oily skin is more prone to pimples, blackheads and white-heads than other skin types and is coarser in texture.
If your skin is dry the tissue will be clean with zero signs of oil. Dry skin occurs when the dermis does not secrete enough oil or sebum, so your face feels tight and flaky. The skin may look duller where wrinkles and lines develop more easily.
If just a little oil appears in the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) of the tissue but does not feel flaky then you can be considered a normal skin type.
If your pores are primarily larger in the T- Zone and visible oil appears only in these areas, while the rest of your skin feels dry, this is an indicator that you have combination skin.
If you gently lift the skin on your cheek and see horizontal lines, this means you skin is dehydrated. This can lead to fine lines and wrinkles being more visible.
Now that I know my skin type, what do I do next?
Now that you can identify your skin type, you can select specific products that are formulated for your skins unique needs. When changing your products, be sure to give them a chance to effectively do their job. Here at VOYA we suggest a minimum 25 days for your skin to become accustomed to the organic nature of our products. When you use synthetic products for a long time, your skin becomes accustomed to those products so you need to allow sufficient time for your skin to adapt.
