Mermaid Hair – A focus on natural hair products27/02/2014

Pearl, caviar, sea salt, and marine algae are all natural ingredients found in the sea, and they are now being used more and more in hair and skincare products. Of the many ingredients used in marine hair care, seaweed is one of the most common. There exists thousands of seaweed species and yet only a fraction of them are being used.
Why Seaweed-Based Hair Care? The Science bit!
The popularity of seaweed as an ingredient in hair and skincare products stems from a form of survival of the fittest evolution that has seen seaweeds develop the ability to defend themselves against harmful free radicals. This natural protective barrier is found in the seaweed extract used today in many hair care ranges. In particular, the brown algae found in VOYA Hair Care Products which we blogged about in a previous post mimics the skin’s function for cell renewal helping to protect the hair and scalp from experiencing further damage. Marine plants, like seaweed, filter the ocean for nutrients and minerals which are then carried into marine-based haircare products. This marine algae provides hydrating, nourishing and antioxidant properties which help to repair stressed-out tresses and strengthen damaged and chemically-treated hair.
Seaweed is also particularly good for the scalp due to its close compatibility to human skin. Due to this marvellous affinity with the skin, scientific evidence shows a very easy assimilation of marine ingredients into the skin according to the Professional Spa & Wellness digital magazine if you flick to page 21. In this way, seaweed-based hair products help to actively protect and nourish the hair right at the root, helping to promote strong growth and healthy, shiny hair.
Caring for Coloured or Treated Hair
If – like me – you colour your hair regularly, you may want to try other measures to cut out the amount of chemicals being pumped into your hair. Natural shampoos and conditioners gently cleanse hair without stripping away the hair’s natural oil levels. Vitamins, amino acids and trace elements found in select seaweeds provide further nourishing and hydrating benefits by helping to lock in moisture shielding the hair from further damage caused by cold winds, sun, rain and heated styling appliances. To give hair an extra boost why not use your conditioner like a mask and leave it in for 20-30 minutes wrapped in a warm towel. I’ve tried this with Forget Me Knot and it’s a wonderful treat on the weekends.
