Your mind is what matters: incorporating mindful skincare into your daily routine20/06/2014

Weaving its way through every trend in 2014 is the simple, but compelling, act of mindfulness: The idea that every action taken should be done with intention–and, in doing so, clear the clutter in your mind caused by the over-stimulation of today’s supercharged world. This is one of the biggest movements the wellness industry has ever seen, and more and more people are waking up to the fact that mindful living breeds a healthy body and a healthy mind.
As a result of this phenomenon we’re now seeing trends like Mindful eating, Mindful meditation and Mindful parenting. And so I’ve decided to focus on Mindful skincare this week. What role does your skincare routine play in Mindful living?
Just as our bodies absorb the food that we eat, our skin, our largest organ, absorbs the ingredients we place on it. As the saying goes, we are what we eat, but it could also be said, we are what we put on our skin!
Mindfulness classes encourage us to listen to our bodies and to think about every movement and action we take. But are we listening to what our largest organ, our skin, is telling us? When we rub our hands together do we listen to the sound it makes? The simple act of rubbing our hands together will quickly tell us if our hands are parched or dry. If our skin breaks out in spots and blemishes it is telling us we’re not looking after it, we’re not listening to it. We may need to think more about what we’re eating and how we’re helping our skin to flush the toxins out therefore allowing it to return to its usual healthy looking glow.
Body and Mind
So how can our skincare habits help us to reach a content state of mind? A colleague recently attended a Mindfulness Day where one of the exercises they did was Mindful Eating. They were told to think about the journey their food made to get to them – from fruit growing on trees, being hand-picked, journeying across oceans to get to that very place. The same goes for the ingredients in your skincare products. Think of the journey they have made and the reasons they have been chosen for specific skincare concerns. Every ingredientin our products is chosen for a reason – Seaweed for its high vitamin and mineral content, Aloe Vera for is soothing and healing properties and Shea Butter for its moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties. Your mind can also rest easy in knowing that the ingredients chosen are sourced responsibly and ethically from organic farmers who support wildlife conservation and animal welfare.
Nourishment is the deepest meaning of the word mindfulness and by choosing your blend of scents carefully you can again nourish your body and your mind from the outside in. Our sense of smell is one of our strongest senses and therefore an important one not to neglect. Our sense of smell has the power to draw up feelings, memories and emotions better than any sight or sound. As aromatherapy plays a greater role in the treatment of pain, depression, insomnia and other physical and mental issues, spas have become motivated to reimagine their aromatherapy approach to provide a more holistic treatment that is personalized and transformative for each client. Therefore, when choosing a product or spa treatment, try to think about what you’re looking to achieve. What are you struggling with? Stress, fatigue, memory-loss? Your choice of scents can help or hinder all of these!
