They say the hardest signs of aging to conceal are on the hands. This isn’t surprising when you think about how much of our lives we have plunged into hands first. For years we type, we cook, we shake hands, we garden and we brave the elements of every extreme, meaning our hands are in need of care and protection. Here’s how to look after your hands prevent dry skin and slow the signs of ageing.
Moisturise and Exfoliate
We’ve spoken at length about the importance of establishing a moisturising routine for your face and body and sticking to it — it’s no less important when it comes to looking after your hands. Wash and exfoliate your hands before going to bed with a natural and organic hand wash that is suitable to your skin type and lock in the moisture with a thick application of moisturiser and if necessary wear moisturising gloves to bed if your hands are especially in need of rejuvenation.
When the sun does occasionally come out in Ireland, we can all be guilty of just looking after the ears, neck and face, all the while assuming that our hands are protected because they were used to apply cream on other areas. What Causes Damaged and Dry Skin on your Hands?
- Industrial hand soap. Whether you’re an artist, a chef or a mechanic or anything else that involves getting your hands dirty, the chances are that your skin undergoes more than a few tough washes than the average pair of hands.
- Dry air. Ireland isn’t exactly famous for dry spells but it’s in the cold winter months the brisk cool air can have a negative impact on hand health.
- Chlorine. If you’re used to a dip in the pool at your local gym or sports club be sure to rinse yourself thoroughly afterwards as the chemical can strip your skin of its natural oils.
- Pollution. Exposure to air pollution in congested areas such as cities can cause wrinkles and visible signs of ageing to the skin over time.
- Using the wrong soap. Choosing the cheapest soap possible in the shop that may not have the best natural ingredients could lead to the drying of skin even if it still cleans.
